The rescue of ‘Halcyon Joey’

While on a morning walk around Celebration Park, it was home owner Des Heiner to the rescue when he stumbled across a joey who had been abandoned by his mother. The joey’s mother is a member of one of the mobs of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that live in harmony with other local wildlife in the area. Halcyon Waters has set aside parklands and more recently the ‘Eastern Grey Passage’ allowing the kangaroos and other local wildlife to connect to the vast natural parklands around Halcyon Waters and Hope Island.

Local wildlife expert Trish Wimberley from the Advancetown Wildlife Rescue was called in to take care of the little five month old joey, who should have been in the pouch for at least another three months. The little fella captured the hearts of home owners and Halcyon staff alike who offered to sponsor his rehabilitation and recovery.

‘Halcyon Joey’, as he is referred to now, is doing just fine under the watchful eyes of Trish and husband Terry, who created their Advancetown Wildlife  Rescue 12 years ago. ‘Halcyon Joey’ is currently downing a bottle every four hours and will soon be dining on pellets, lucern and grass.

Recently awarded 2012 Gold Coast Citizen of the year Trish is particularly fond of ‘Halcyon Joey’ and will oversee his 12 month long rehabilitation. In about seven months time he will be old enough to be moved to a pre release site to meet other joeys his size and age and form a mob. The final step will be when ‘Halcyon Joey’ and his new mob are released back into the wild at a special release site.
